I am currently studying History at The Open University and I am located in East Hertfordshire. After I graduate, I plan to study at the Institute of Heraldic & Genealogical Studies and to become a member of AGRA.
My first interaction with family history was in February of 2020. I had been asking my parents some questions about their grandparents and I then wanted to learn about their parents and it carried on from there. As I was in full time education then, I really wanted to just stay home and research my family history all day every day. I got this wish in March of 2020 when we went into lockdown. Since then, I have consistently been researching my own family history as well as friends and other family members.
My paternal family history has been researched for over 20 years by my grandad, uncle and other family members. Having this research already done meant that i could research specific things and work at ‘brick walls’. For example, an ancestor of mine married a French man and they lived in France for a some time. Whilst my Grandad knew some stories and a vague address, he had never been able to locate where exactly the house was located. Using my knowledge of the French language and country, I was luckily able to locate the house within an hour of research. From pictures
My maternal family history had not been researched at all and much of it was a complete mystery. This allowed me to practice different research methods and answer decade-long questions that my family members had.
How far back can my family tree be traced?
This is a tricky question as documentation, and the reliability of it, varies massively. For research in Britain, there is a good chance that your family history can be tracked back to around 1800. Research before 1800 is very much possible but gets increasingly harder the further back we go.
What information is essential to start with?
It is best to start with yourself and work back using names and dates that you already know. The more information that you can gather to start with, the more in-depth research can be undertaken.
How long does it take to complete the project?
The length of the project largely depends on the depth of the project. If there is a certain date you would like the research done by, please let us know beforehand as this will help to reduce any miscommunications. As genealogy can be very unpredictable, it is very hard to guarantee a specific deadline. However, taking the starter package as an example, this type of project would likely take 7-10 days.
Why is it so much cheaper compared to other genealogists?
There are several reasons as to why family history research is cheaper at Parkers Genealogy. We undertake our research exclusively online which reduces many fees, such as travel. Another reason that the overall project may be cheaper is that we don’t automatically resort to ordering certificates. Whilst this is what some people prefer, and are happy to pay for, we don’t want this to be the default. We instead use free transcriptions and locate free digital copies of the certificates. This allows us to access the same information at a lower rate.
